Deadlift Training 1/23/06

Was going for a triple with 555 but it was easy so I did 4. Five was possible but I don't want to burn out. SLDLs were brutal! I forgot how hard they are. I went light the first week and did them without straps. Shoulder felt good so I did some rows but with a much closer grip.

Deadlifts 555x4
SLDL off Plates 365x5
Bent Over Rows off Plates 275x5/315x7
Shrugs 365x4x20

Nice workout Mike. Good to hear that the shoulder is feeling better.

Thanks. I feel that the shoulder is doing better b/c of my split. if I just did regular close grips instead of floor press and eliminated inclines I would probably be pain free. But 95% is just fine for me.

Nice work on the DL, Mike. Always good to go for a little extra and get it. BTW, what is your deadlifting style like?

Thanks guys. Alberto, I deadlift conventional style and use a lot of leg in my deadlifts. John, Last time I maxed I did 565 very easy. I'm good for 605 now, I know it. I also feel my deadlift will go up even more with the addition of front squats.

Hey, Mike... very nice workout! All your pulling is looking strong...
I noticed that floor pressing hurt my shoulder too, wonder why?
Did you get the idea for front squatting from Bard Gillingham? I know he advocates doing them to build a stronger deadlift.

Jon, I never really do alot of volume in my workouts. It seems to be the newest thing but I've found my body, but more importantly, my joints respond better to the lower volume. As for the front squats, I has a 1st SGT in the Army who was a national USAPL champion deadlifting 585@165. He always said to do front squats and that's where I got the idea. In the past, whenever I do front sqauts my deadlift goes up at the same time. No coincidence. John, I didn't know Brad suggest to do fronts but once again it's no coincidence that he is a great deadlifter who again suggest doing them. Just a note, a bodybuilder named Ronnie Coleman(who I'm sure we all know) did a cycle where he specialized on front squats for his thighs and for the first time in his life he was able to do 2 reps with 805 in the deadlift after that cycle.

Maybe. I don't know yet b/c I'm still in a rebuilding phase that is taking much longer than anticipated. I still don't see myself as competitive in WNPF for 242 yet. They're having a comp in March in Philly but I don't know. I want to get more work in before that time. I was thinking maybe in June/July but that's still in the air. I am a platform lifter but like I said I still don't feel as competitive as I want to be. Probably once I meet my goals of 605/405/605 at 242 I will then train for a meet.
